Abertis tests multilingual mobile TV delivery in Spain

UDcast's iSplicer allows for differentiated content delivery to mobile devices
Spanish broadcaster Abertis Telecom is testing the commercial viability of delivering localized mobile TV content in the country's various languages across a DVB-H platform. The company is using UDcast's iSplicer satellite distribution system, which allows differentiated content to be delivered to thousands of broadcast towers simultaneously, for the trial. It is currently conducting six trials across the country.
Spain is home to several different regional tongues besides Spanish, including Asturian, Aragonese, Aranese, Basque, Catalan/Valencian and Galician. Abertis is looking to capitalize on these differences by delivering TV content from local channels broadcasting in some of these languages. It would also provide advertisements targeted to different regions in local languages.
The iSplicer system, designed for installation at transmission towers and 2G and 3G cellular base stations, enables the primary distribution of mobile TV content directly to DVB-H broadcast towers via standard satellite links or IP multicast networks. The ability to localize content is powered by the system's isochronous DVB-H splicer, which allows for dynamic local selection of national and regional content, as well as content selection of SFN and MFN cells.
According to Filip Gluszak, VP of marketing for UDcast, the ability to offer localized content and advertising can allow broadcasters using iSplicer to increase revenues by potentially 10 to 30 percent. In addition, he said that satellite delivery of mobile TV signals saves money, reducing the cost and time of deploying a separate transmission network for the service.
