Affinegy makes home network a lifestyle network

When the sun rose on the new millennium, Affinegy CEO Melissa Simpler was a Motorola engineer designing IP entertainment gateways, e.g. set-top boxes. "That's where we caught the energy around new media," she explains. Two years later, Simpler and colleague Art Lancaster went on to start a similar venture, but found themselves back at the beginning when the venture investors backed out.

So the partners went back to the drawing board. "WiFi was getting big," says Simpler. "We saw an opportunity to make that technology work for home networks, to be the 'glue.'" Starting up this time with their own money, the fledgling company created InstaLAN, a plug-and-play home network that was integrated into service provider offerings. The company's byline is, "It just works." Today, Affinegy counts Virgin Broadband and Time Warner Cable among its rapidly growing customer base.

Now Affinegy is expanding beyond the four walls to the home to help operators embrace the entire digital and mobile lifestyle with its new DigiDo home and mobile entertainment convergence suite.

"Our play in mobile TV is evolving fast, particularly with netbooks," Simpler says. "Netbooks, the mini-PC category, are rapidly growing [and] are the next mobile TV platform. Our software provides a low-cost and highly portable platform that enables the mobile TV connection to move from the handset to the larger screen. We deliver the service or content provider brand to the subscriber and wrap that around a seamless, robust pipe."
