Onboard entertainment is getting a boost from Maxim's new triple-band mobile TV and digital radio tuner

Ideal for fixed or mobile DAB and T-DMB applications, Maxim Integrated Products' new MAX2170E/W is a triple-band, dual-mode mobile TV and digital radio tuner in a small fully RF-tested die for system-in-a-package and module applications. Using smaller dice reduces cost through a higher module yield.

Built on the TQFN-packaged MAX2170ETL, the MAX2170E/W supports implementation of system-in-a-package (SIP) solutions for terrestrial digital multimedia broadcast (T-DMB) and ultra-small, digital audio broadcast (DAB) modules.

The new tuner contains all the necessary blocks to implement a low-IF TV/radio tuner, except for a crystal and the L-band filtering required by some applications. It receives VHF band-III, L-band and FM broadcasts with few external components. It also reduces cost by eliminating the need for an external, low-noise amplifier circuit by integrating a low-noise, L-band front end. When tuning VHF frequencies, its tracking filter rejects out-of-band interference; the tracking filter also doubles as an FM band-select filter. This highly integrated device achieves a sensitivity of -99dBm at L-band frequencies, -100dBm at VHF-III frequencies and -109dBm at FM frequencies.

Operating from a 2.7V to 3.5V supply, it consumes approximately 150MW in L-band, low-power mode. Fully specified in the -40 degrees Celsius to 85 degrees Celsius temperature range, it's available as a fully RF-tested die.
