At NSCA, pro audio manufacturer D&M Professional displayed the new Marantz CDR420 portable CD recorder. This mobile unit is notable for the power provided by its onboard hard disc for recording, cut-and-paste field editing, and CD writer for burning Red Book-compatible audio or MP3 discs.
On the input side, twin XLR inputs offer 48 vdc phantom power and mic/line attenuation pads to accommodate all professional microphones, as well as unbalanced line inputs on RCA and S/PDIF digital I/O. By recording 44.kHz WAV or MP3 files directly to its 20GB hard drive, the CDR420 is capable of instant field editing, including cut/copy/paste functions, plus silence insert and split track. CDs can be burned in standard Red Book audio format or in ISO9660 data format containing WAV and/or MP3 files. Multiple MP3 bitrates allow the user to specify the best combination of audio quality and record time. Once back in the office, data is easily uploaded to PC via its USB 2.0 port.
A stereo headphone jack and built-in speaker allow for monitoring, and automatic record level, limiter and manual record modes enable user control of input levels while preventing distortion. Recording filters help minimize background noise, and audible fast-forward and rewind functions provide easy, quick locating within a track. A real-time clock offers the user the ability to set start and stop times for unattended recording, and a 3-band equalizer optimizes audio quality on playback. Future upgrades to the unit’s firmware can be uploaded via the unit’s I/O port.
