Liberty Wire & Cable has assumed a leadership role in environmentally sensitive manufacturing.
Being in compliance with the European Union’s Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive has helped Colorado Springs, CO-based Liberty Wire & Cable move to a higher profile position in the A/V and broadcast industries. An emerging leader in the manufacture of socially responsible, environmentally friendly products, Liberty offers a broad spectrum of wire and cable products that comply with emerging green market standards, which entails significantly reducing the use of potentially harmful chemicals.
Even though RoHS standards have only been in effect since 2006, Liberty has been voluntarily developing RoHS-compliant products for the past several years. According to senior VP Kirk Horlbeck, more than 90 percent of Liberty’s products are RoHS compliant.
The RoHS directive restricts the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) in electronic and electrical equipment. PBB and PBDE are flam retardants. Many other countries are implementing or considering similar directives. In the United States, California already recognizes portions of the directive, while other states and cities are debating whether to adopt similar laws. The RoHS directive is also part of a broader legislative initiative to solve the problems presented by huge amounts of toxic waste.
