Sony ships new digital wireless system

Sony’s new portable digital wireless system includes the DWT-B01 bodypack transmitter and DWR-SO1D camera-mount receiver.
At NAB2008, Sony demonstrated its new digital wireless system, designed to operate with the full range of next-generation Sony XDCAM camcorders, including the new PDW-700 HD 422. Comprised of the DWT-B01 bodypack transmitter and DWR-S01D digital wireless receiver, the new system offers significant advantages for news, sports and reality TV producers. The system also offers a DWA-01D wireless tuner adaptor for use with Sony’s HDCAM, XDCAM, Digital Betacam and MPEG IMX professional camcorders. Components are expected to ship imminently.
“Sony’s objective was to engineer digital wireless systems that provide a significant improvement in audio quality and operational flexibility for electronic news and field production professionals,” said Paul Foschino, senior manager for professional audio in Sony Electronics’ Broadcast and Production Systems Division.
Using a new Sony codec chip, the DWT-B01 and DWR-S01D units deliver 24-bit/48kHz secure digital wireless audio transmission quality with low latency. The system delivers a 106dB dynamic range and 20Hz-22kHz of frequency response.
Incorporating a newly developed digital modulator, the system works in the existing UHF frequency range and achieves simultaneous operation of up to 12 channels in a single UHF channel (6MHz). An innovative digital modulator permits highly stable wireless transmission said to be extremely tolerant to interference. Digitally modulated and encrypted data helps to provide secure transmission and minimize the risk of interception.
The compact DWT-B01 digital wireless transmitter accepts mic or line input, is selectable for 1/10/50mW output power and sports a legible dot-matrix organic EL display. The compact, rugged DWR-S01D receiver is a two-channel slot-in design that supports analog or AES3 digital audio output. The receiver mounts directly to the new PDW-700 HD 422 camcorder. An available DWA-01D adaptor enables direct receiver mounting to other common Sony models and includes headphone monitoring and word sync input.
