JBL Pro loudspeakers dominate Grammy arena and control rooms

JBL Professional loudspeakers were used in the arena and monitoring rooms of the 50th Annual Grammy Awards telecast from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. JBL’s LSR Series studio monitors, VerTec line arrays and VRX portable line arrays all played important roles in the event. The awards were broadcast live in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS as well as the radio via Westwood One worldwide and XM Satellite Radio.
Members of the Recording Academy’s producers and engineers wing used JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitors for critical monitoring during the telecast, while mix engineer Klaus Landsberg used JBL LSR4300 Series studio monitors while creating the audience reaction mix. "Tremendous production value went into the 50th Grammy telecast,” said Michael Abbott, audio director for the awards. “It was essential to accurately hear the subtleties of the show. As in the past, we chose a 5.1 JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitor system for its ability to deliver accuracy, even in problematic rooms, and once again, the system did the job perfectly."
For the live audience in the Staples Center, rental system provider ATK/Audiotek deployed a JBL VerTec line array system, with 70 VT4889 elements flying above the stage. Twelve VRX932LA subwoofers, powered by Crown I-Tech amps, provided bass reinforcement.
