The TEC Awards will be presented in a new ceremony during the AES show this October.

The Mix Foundation for Excellence in Audio has announced the nominees for its 25th annual Technical Excellence & Creativity (TEC) Awards, to be presented Oct. 10 at the AES Convention in New York City. The TEC Awards honors outstanding achievement in professional audio production and product design.

The event is being hosted by AES and will happen at the Special Events Room in the convention center toward the end of the show day on Saturday, according to Mix Foundation general manager and President Hillel Resner. The program will start around 5 p.m. with an open bar followed immediately by the award presentations. “We’re foregoing the banquet this year, so tickets will be much more reasonable,” Resner said. “Everything is aimed at making this year’s TEC Awards easier for everyone to attend. Judging by the early voter registration, interest is stronger than ever, so we’re looking forward to a great event.” The Special Events Room at the Javits Center has a capacity of about 500.

Nominees were announced in 16 categories of product design, to be followed by nine categories of creative achievement in sound production. The nominations, made by a select panel of more than 100 audio professionals, cover products and projects released or completed during the one-year period prior to March 31, 2009. Solid State Logic and TC Electronics led the manufacturers with four nominations, while AKG and Universal Audio each received three. Euphonix, Focusrite, JBL, Sennheiser, Telefunken and Yamaha earned two nominations apiece.

Online voting begins on Aug. 10, with registration available at the foundation’s Web site. Voters will include members of professional audio organizations including the Audio Engineering Society (AES); the Producer and Engineers Wing of the Recording Academy; the Society of Professional Audio Recording Services (SPARS) and the Game Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.). Voting is being run by Broadjam.com, a music site that also runs voting for the Country Music Awards.

Through the TEC Awards and other activities, the Mix Foundation raises funds for a variety of educational programs and initiatives. The foundation’s primary cause is hearing conservation, with the goal of raising awareness of hearing health issues in the industry, and funding scholarship programs for aspiring audio professionals.

A Mechanism to Recover Lost MPEG / IP Delivery Data in Real Time

sponsored by: Sencore

In the ever advancing world of media content delivery, MPEG over IP (MPEG/IP) has been gaining popularity for a number of reasons. MPEG/IP delivery offers lower costs, higher bandwidth, greater efficiency, and new application possibilities over the traditional methods, such as: Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and RF networks. Along with the benefits, come a number of challenges. One of the biggest challenges is a mechanism to recover lost data in real-time. This paper will attempt to shed some light on the inner workings of the real-time data recovery mechanism: Pro-MPEG Code of Practice #3 Forward Error Correction (CoP#3 FEC). Read Now
