SSL showcases audio technologies at AES

The 240-square-foot cedar shed, used at the recent AES convention as a showcase for audio technologies from several manufacturers, is a turnkey professional recording studio.
At the AES show in New York City, Solid State Logic introduced its latest offering called “Shed of Your Dreams.” The standalone, full-featured hideaway recording studio is so compact that it can fit in a backyard.
The idea came from recording artist Peter Gabriel, who wrote many of his best works in a shed at the bottom of his garden. With the idea that every creative artist should have a personal shed, SSL realized Gabriel’s vision at the recent AES show. He was on hand to greet convention attendees and discuss his company’s latest offering.
The 240sq-ft cedar shed was used as a showcase for audio technologies from several manufacturers. Housed in a Summerwood Cheyenne model “ready to assemble” cabin, the centerpiece of the studio is an SSL AWS 900+ console connected to SSL XLogic processing and converters. Auralex provided acoustic treatment, Argosy contributed the studio furniture, and Henick-Lane supplied the air conditioning.
Beyond being a fantasy for home recordists, SSL made it clear that the shed is a serious, real-world recording studio that can also be customized and installed as a quick, 30-day turn-key supplement to professional broadcast and production facilities.
The shed requires only a concrete pad, power connection and a building permit. To guarantee performance, the studio package includes a visit by one of SSL’s engineers to verify the audio installation, provide introductory console training and certify the facility.
The cost — assembled and delivered with all gear — is less than $250,000, depending on exact finish, specification and location.
