WDR commissions BFE to renew Cologne broadcast center
Oct 3, 2007 8:09 AM
German Systems Integrator BFE will lead the modernization of the server-based transmission center of Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR). This project includes the renewal of the master control room as well as playout automation and external networking.
BFE’s KSC Manager System constitutes the core element in the master control room and allows a partially automated operation of the KSC Studio Control System. The KSC system controls the Thomson 512 x 512 control system, the Stagetec NEXUS audio control router and some smaller control routers. A Miranda Kaleido-X multiviewer system and TFT displays in several sizes are also included to monitor visual signals.
The new TV master control room will be set up and put into operation in parallel with the already existing master control room.
BFE is also responsible for the modernization of the playout automation with Aveco Astra automation software. First, one of the transmission lines will be taken out of operation and the existing hardware will be used to construct a new transmission line that includes the Astra automation. This procedure will then be repeated with the second transmission line. The master control project will use Omneon Spectrum servers, Snell & Wilcox periphery equipment and several TFT displays connected to Miranda Kaleido-X multiviewers.
