AT&T begins replacing 17,000 U-Verse cabinet batteries

AT&T last week began replacing batteries in the network cabinets of its IPTV U-Verse service after four equipment fires since fall 2006 believed to be started by exploding batteries.

The company will replace 17,000 batteries manufactured by the now-defunct Avestor. The fires occurred in network cabinets used by U-Verse customers in Texas, Ohio and Wisconsin. No one was injured in the incidents.
