IPTV operators look to VOD as ultimate ‘holy grail’

IPTV operators are in a strong position to drive the evolution of video on demand (VOD) business models, according to a newly released study from Pyramid Research.

As the latest entrants to the pay-TV market, IPTV operators are pursuing the VOD opportunity aggressively and are increasingly banking on VOD to enhance the TV experience.

The study, “Can VOD Save IPTV? VOD Economics, Global Forecast and the Case for IPTV VOD,” highlights the moves of telcos to build VOD platforms, including France Telecom’s co-producing movies and Telefónica’s VOD offerings built around exclusive soccer content.

According to the author of the report, Ozgur Aytar, the “holy grail” for IPTV operators is to change the television viewing experience to one more like the Internet, where programming “flows through the VOD platform” to provide consumers with ultimate control over what they watch.
