IBC2002: Back to ''normal''

IBC2002: Back to "normal"
By Gerald Walker
What is “normal” for IBC2002? Clearly, a year ago following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in the USA, the sharp fall-off of American attendance was not normal. This year there is another, less violent cloud hanging over the convention — the terrible state of the American and European economies and the impact on broadcasting. Setbacks in the digital terrestrial enterprises in the UK and Spain earlier this year have also caused serious rethinking.
Still, the march of digital technology goes on, and IBC continues to be the best international venue to learn, evaluate and acquire the systems driving digital television. Exhibitors are unsure what to expect in the way of attendance, primarily because of the uncertain economic climate. The optimists suggest that while actual numbers may decline as they did at NAB, visitors who do attend will arrive with a purpose. And they will be in Amsterdam to make serious buying decisions.
An American summed it up: “We are expecting a return to normalcy. Last year, like many American companies, we did not attend the show. This year, we have a good story to tell, we have a lot of new products and a good location. The European market is very important to us, and participation in IBC is a key component of our marketing effort in that region.”
Another exhibitor pointed out that despite the collapse of ITV Digital in the UK, there is still money around to launch new channels such as travel and shopping channels. These opportunities spell new business for companies specializing in asset management and automation.
Meanwhile, IBC has done its part to be the most user-friendly broadcast enclave. This year, it has a 2-pronged theme: “The Event for Content, Creation, Management, Delivery,” coupled with “A Year's Knowledge in One Show.” Does that leave anyone out?
Two user-friendly innovations designed to lure cost-conscious and time-pressed visitors are available this year. For one, it is possible to create a personal schedule of conference and exhibition attendance. So, if you haven't got enough time to come to all of the conference sessions, which this year run from Thursday, 12 September through Monday, 16 September, you can register for just one or two and fit them around time spent on the show floors or at meetings.
Another option is to pick one of the theme days covering topics of special interest. This year there are six topics — delivery, interactivity, news, content, D-Cinema and radio — during the five days of the conference featuring papers, panels and keynotes. This option can be done by choosing a single day registration.
Of course, the usual option of full 5-day registration remains. Full-time conference registrants get access to all sessions, master classes and tutorials; receive a copy of the conference papers; can go to the exhibition every day; and get a ticket to the now-famous IBC Party.
Hot topics: The sequel
Two of the hot topics returning to IBC this year are Interactivity (Friday) and D-Cinema (Monday). While these have held high hopes for the future, many issues remain unresolved.
Panels for the interactivity day take on the issues. These include: Interactive Enablers, Interactive Content and Formats, Security and Standards, Interactive Business Considerations, Getting Intimate with Consumer Data, and Debunking the Jargon — Interactive TV Unzipped. The combination of papers and panels for D-Cinema include: The Technology — Episode One; What do you make of it all; The Technology — Episode Two; and Show us the Money.
The September issue will provide a detailed look at the IBC2002 conference and a round-up of what a cross-section of exhibitors consider the key issues and market trends as IBC opens.
Show floors
The exhibition runs from 13 to 17 September at Amsterdam's RAI and will occupy all 11 halls. This year, the halls will be arranged in product groups. Halls 1, 3, 4, and 5 will focus on delivery, including cable, satellite, broadband and transmitters. Hall 7 remains the post-production and graphics areas, while Hall 8 will contain playout automaton and audio for video. Halls 9 and 10 will focus on added value and consultancy, including systems integrators and asset management. Hall 11 has been expanded to include D-Cinema along with the more traditional production systems. OB vehicles will be located both inside and outside the RAI.
Sounds like a lot of space to cover, but not to worry; IBC has designed another innovation to help steer people to some of the hot products. Called “What Caught My Eye,” this 2002 newcomer will provide an additional opportunity for the creative community to hear about products introduced at the exhibition.
According to IBC, leading world figures will tour the stands and bring back reports on what producers need to know before they go. What Caught My Eye sessions will be free to all those attending IBC and will be held at 12.30 to 13.30 on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
As a further guide to the new technology being shown at this year's IBC exhibition, the Broadcast Engineering - World Edition staff has compiled a roundup below of some of the products that are not to be missed while perusing the floors of the RAI Centre. Look for more IBC product coverage in our September issue.
