AVC-Intra, JPEG2000 begin making their mark, says author

According to a new article from author and industry consultant Tore Nordahl, AVC-Intra and JPEG2000 are poised to begin making their mark in the HD camcorder market, which has long been dominated by MPEG-2 Intra technology.

Published on his coax.tv Web site, the article, "The AVC HD camcorders are here with JPEG2000 right behind," discusses the relative encoding efficiencies achieved by AVC-Intra, JPEG2000 and MPEG-2 Intra codecs. In the article, Nordahl also speculates about the impact AVCHD is likely to have in the consumer and prosumer camcorder market.

Writing about the Panasonic AJ-HPX2000, the company's first full-size AVC-Intra camera, and the product family it belongs to, Nordahl said: "this is no doubt the beginning of a very powerful range of market-leading HD acquisition tools." 

On the JPEG2000 front, Thomson has delayed the ship date of the Grass Valley Infinity HD camcorder until summer, the article said. The company will rely on a 3-CMOS imager of its own design for native 1920 x 1080 acquisition, it reported.
