CNN is using Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) technology onboard its mini news bureau following Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), Barack Obama (D-IL) and John McCain (R-AZ) to provide coverage from the campaign trail.
The mobile news bureau, deployed on the 45ft CNN Election Express bus, has been used throughout the presidential primary season to cover the primary candidates. The bureau serves as the center for newsgathering and production, providing a newsroom for up to 20 journalists, an interview studio and editing facilities.
CNN first deployed the mini bureau concept early in the primary season in Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina. The CNN Election Express has now been sent to Philadelphia ahead of the Pennsylvania primary on April 22.
With four HD cameras, 10 LCD monitors and a large plasma screen, the CNN Election Express can support HD newsgathering.
A BGAN terminal, with an omnidirectional antenna that tracks the Inmarsat satellite, is attached to the vehicle to enable transmissions while the Election Express is on the move.
