KPIX transitions to HD news production with Kahuna switcher
May 28, 2008 9:30 AM
KPIX, the CBS O&O in San Francisco, is broadcasting its local news in HD using a Snell & Wilcox Kahuna multiformat production switcher.
The station relies on the Kahuna switcher to integrate content from a variety of sources and formats, including SD, into the HD news production without external conversion equipment.
The station currently airs 27.5 hours per week of its local news in HD as well as its "Eye on the Bay" local magazine show. The Kahuna switcher is part of KPIX's redesigned control room that features digital, file-based broadcast automation technologies and a new workflow based on electronically generated run sheets.
At the same time, the workflow incorporates legacy systems and equipment for producing and managing SD content. For example, newsgathering crews continue to use SD cameras on remotes, while the studio cameras are HD. All SD content is converted to HD via the Kahuna's FormatFusion technology.
In addition to the Kahuna switcher, KPIX relies on Snell & Wilcox's IQ modular line, running RollCall control and monitoring software for video and audio distribution.
This eBook provides both new and veteran shooters an in-depth understanding of the technology that lies between the camera lens and the recording medium and how to maximize a camera's performance.
