SBE withdraws objection to Ericsson STA application

The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) April 3 conditionally withdrew an informal objection it filed last month with the FCC regarding telecommunications company Ericsson’s application for Special Temporary Authority (STA) to operate an experimental facility at Parsippany, NJ.
The SBE had objected to the application largely because of interference caused by a similar Ericsson experimental STA operating at 2110MHz to 2120MHz in Queens, NY. That experimental station caused WABC-TV in New York City to experience “serious interference” to its Northshore ENG receive-only site in Queens for about three weeks. According to the SBE, Ericsson has said the interference was inadvertent and that its failure to coordinate with TV pickup licensees in the area was an oversight that would not be repeated.
In withdrawing its informal objection, the SBE noted that Ericsson has agreed to focus its experimental operation from the Parsippany station at the upper half of the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) A-block rather than AWS Channel A1 between 2110MHz-2115MHz. According to the SBE, that will lower out-of-band emissions in TV Broadcast Auxiliary Channel (BAS) Channel 7 at 2093MHz-2110MHz.
Ericsson also agreed to:
- Notify TV Pickup station licensees authorized to operate near the experimental station and to inform the local BAS frequency coordinators via email of when it plans to operate;
- Staff a hotline telephone number when the experimental site operates with someone who has the authority to cease operations if harmful interference to a TV BAS licensee is reported.
