The XDCAM system offers the ability to view thumbnails of recorded video in the field, which has proven to be a real time saver for the crew of “On the Lot.”
Sony’s XDCAM Professional Disc system is being used for the new reality show, “On the Lot,” which airs this summer on Fox Television.
The show is using 12 camcorders, each shooting independently. A key reason the Sony system was chosen was its ability to store scene files, which helps ensure color uniformity from camera to camera. With the scene file feature, each camera can be matched to have the exact same look.
The show features aspiring filmmakers who endure a rigorous Hollywood boot camp and learn the intricacies of small-screen television production. The staff production crews shoot the series using the camera’s progressive 30P mode to create a unique look.
The show’s executives said the XDCAM’s thumbnail viewing of recorded video in the field allows operators to review scenes and then instantly resume recording when ready without having to rewind and fast-forward tape. That feature has proven a time-saver, they said.
