TVNZ streamlines news workflow with Quantel sQ news production system

New Zealand national broadcaster TVNZ is scheduled to go live this month with an integrated Quantel Enterprise sQ news production system at its Auckland headquarters.

The sQ system will be used for all of TVNZ’s news production needs, including support of the launch of a new digital news and information channel and for the production of news content for mobile devices and the Web. Similar Quantel Enterprise sQ news production systems will go live in TVNZ news bureaus in Wellington and Christchurch later this year.

Full integration and media sharing among the three sites using Quantel’s ZoneMagic technology will follow when New Zealand’s data transmission infrastructure is expanded.

TVNZ installed a Quantel Inspiration system in 2001. The broadcaster has used the system, which is integrated with its Avid iNews newsroom computer system, to expand into Wellington and Christchurch with shared content in an integrated digital environment.

The Auckland system is based on two sQ servers with support for more than 50 journalist shot selection and editing applications. Those are available on any of the more than 250 desktops around TVNZ as well as a number of sQ Edit Plus craft editors. Automation is by Omnibus, with redundant backup for ingest and playout via Quantel’s sQ Record and sQ Play applications.
