Two more groups have joined the opposition to using spectrum white space for Internet access with unlicensed devices.
Last week, the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) and the Hispanic Technology and Telecommunications Partnership (HTTP) wrote letters to FCC chairman Kevin Martin opposing FCC policy that would allow use of the white space spectrum.
The OMVC is an alliance of TV stations eyeing development of mobile digital video broadcasting. Such broadcasts, it said, would be embedded within the existing 19.4Mb/s digital signals of television stations.
The HTTP group said the Hispanic community views over-the-air television signals at significantly higher rates than the nonminority national average. “The Commission’s proposal to permit unlicensed personal and portable devices in the TV band could undermine the ability of Hispanic television viewers to have access to interference-free over-the-air television in the digital era,” the group told Martin.
