News managers have a variety of choices to make when it comes to how they want their field reporters to contribute HD news stories.

Variables like available bandwidth, acquisition format and type of encoding used all add to the time needed to transport an edited HD story from the field to the station.

According to Bitcentral CEO Fred Fourcher, his experience indicates that news managers find it unacceptable for the time needed to contribute a story from the field to exceed 15 to 20 minutes. That fundamental requirement frames the whole topic and should help direct news managers choose among the variables.

At the SMPTE Annual Tech Conference and Expo that concluded last week in Hollywood, CA, Fourcher presented a paper explaining the considerations that must shape an informed decision about how to contribute edited HD news stories from the field.

In this the first of a two-part interview with Fourcher, the Bitcentral CEO discusses bandwidth restrictions, file sizes, acquisition formats, H.264 encoding and the impact of NLEs with smart rendering features.

Editor's note: Bitcentral has made Fourcher’s SMPTE presentation available on its Web site.
