KHQ to roll out local HD news based on Thomson Grass Valley file-based workflow

KHQ, the NBC affiliate in Spokane, WA, will soon begin producing and broadcasting its local news in HD and streamlining its news department and programming operations by relying on a file-based workflow built around Thomson Grass Valley news production equipment.
To complete its conversion to digital HD news production, the station’s news department has acquired eight Thomson Grass Valley Aurora Craft edit systems, three EDIUS Broadcast laptop edit systems, an Aurora Browse software system with 2TB of storage, 10 Aurora Browse workstations and a K2 HD media server/media client system with 6TB of storage. The purchase also includes more than 10 AVC-Intra licenses to handle footage acquired with Panasonic P2 solid-state cameras.
The new system provides real-time functionality with Thomson Grass Valley broadcast servers and storage.
KHQ joins other stations, including KCBS in Los Angeles, WKYT in Lexington, KY, and KYW in Philadelphia, that are using the Thomson Grass Valley Aurora HD digital news production system linked to a K2 HD storage area network (SAN) to produce local HD news content.
The station will also install a comprehensive and fully automated playout system that features a K2 HD media server/media client with 55 hours of storage and Aurora Playout software.
KHQ currently operates a Thomson Grass Valley Jupiter/Venus routing system and a Saturn master control system. The station has been broadcasting NBC network prime-time programming in 1080i HD since 2006.
