RAI in Italy adopts P2 for newsgathering

Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) will replace its legacy cameras and field editing systems used for production of national and regional news with Panasonic AG-HVX200E camcorders and AG-HPG10E portable player/recorders, the company said last week.
RAI plans to improve its workflow in the field by using the solid-state P2 media, said Roberto Cecatto, deputy director of RAI TV's production department. The broadcasters also will benefit from the equipment’s support for DV tapes, which will let it migrate its production centers and regional offices more easily with the ultimate goal of HDTV production, he added.
The acquisition is part of a multiyear framework agreement opening a new relationship between the broadcaster and Panasonic Professional & Broadcast IT Systems Business Unit Europe (PBITS).
RAI joins several European broadcasters, including TF1 in France, Canal 4 and CNN Plus in Spain, RTBF in Belgium and Reuters, in adopting the P2 format.
