WLS-TV shoots HD ENG with JVC GY-HD250s

WLS-TV, the ABC-owned station in Chicago, has purchased two JVC GY-HD250U ProHD cameras for live HD microwave remotes from the station's ENG mobile vans.

The station has equipped two HD-ready ENG vans with the JVC GY-HD250 cameras for live remotes. WLS-TV is using a Miranda Technologies ASI Bridge in each truck to convert the live 720 60p 19.7Mb/s MPEG-2 transport stream from the 1394 ports on the JVC cameras to ASI streams, which feeds the vans' digital microwave transmitters and are ultimately decoded at the station back to HD-SDI for production.

The approach to HD remotes is affordable because the camera produces native 1280 x 720 60p HD video and has a built in HD encoder for transmission.

WLS-TV became one of the first Chicago stations to broadcast its local news programming on Jan. 6.
