Amsterdam – Sept. 7, 2012 – IBC booth 8.B80 – Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), a leader in the development of mobile and fixed broadband communication networks, multimedia systems, image signal and 3D today announces its selection as winner of the IBC2012 Best Conference Paper Award.
The paper, titled “Fully Automatic Stereo-to-Multiview Conversion in Autostereoscopic Displays,” explains Fraunhofer HHI’s new method for generating signals from stereoscopic material for 3D viewing. Authors from the image processing department Christian Riechert, Frederik Zilly, Peter Kauff, Jens Güther and Ralf Schäfer describe how the method enables 3D viewing without special eyewear for multiple viewers simultaneously.
“The technique developed by the imaging department goes a long way in meeting the growing demand for 3D applications,” said Christian Reichert. “We are honored that IBC has recognized how Fraunhofer HHI not only understands but is able to address the unique needs and challenges faced by today’s production professionals to stay ahead of the market.”
Award judges commemorated Fraunhofer HHI not only for its innovative technological approach but also for meeting a pressing industry demand. While the vast majority of 3D production techniques still utilize a two-camera stereoscopic approach, Fraunhofer HHI produces the multiple camera views necessary for autostereoscopic content through an algorithm that computes and generates the missing angles. This algorithm is capable of converting stereoscopic content into autostereoscopic content inside the television receiver in real time for a glasses-free 3D experience for multiple viewers in a home setting.
The IBC Best Paper Award is given annually to the paper with the most innovative subject matter. This is the second time the image processing department of the Fraunhofer HHI received this high distinction
Christian Riechert will present the paper on behalf of Fraunhofer HHI during the session “Stereoscopic 3D Content and Display - Developments and Diagnoses” on September 9 at 2:00PM at IBC.
IBC attendees can see a demo of Fraunhofer HHI’s autostereoscopic 3D algorithm as part of the Fraunhofer booth (Hall 8, B.80). The demo features the use of the algorithm in the European project MUSCADE (MUltimedia SCAlable 3D for Europe).
