Worldwide HD households total 4 million as of spring, says In-Stat/MDR

More than 4 million TV households are receiving and watching high definition television, according to survey results released in the spring.

An In-Stat/MDR market research report showed that as of spring:

  • Only four countries offered HD service beyond an experimental basis. They include Japan, the United States, Canada, and Australia. A few other countries, mostly in the Asia-Pacific region, are expected to roll out limited HDTV services in the next year.
  • Japan has more than 2 million households receiving and watching HDTV programming; the United States ranks second with more than 1.5 million.

The In-Stat/MDR findings are part of a report entitled: “High Definition TV Services: Coming to a Home Near You?”.
