Martin succeeds Powell as FCC chairman

President George W. Bush today designated Kevin Martin to be chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.
Martin, who has been a commissioner since 2001, will take the reigns of the FCC as issues that will shape the broadcast industry come to a head. Chief among those will be the ultimate resolution of a date certain for the completion of the digital transition and switch-off of analog television service. While that issue may ultimately be decided by lawmakers, the commission will play a critical role in its unfolding.
In a statement posted on www.fcc.gov, Martin, 38, thanked out-going Chairman Michael Powell and said he was “deeply honored” to be designated as the new chairman.
