Fears about a slowing U.S. economy haven’t slowed worldwide demand for large-sized LCD panels used in notebook PCs, flat-panel computer monitors and TV sets, according to iSuppli.

The research firm predicts that unit shipments of LCD panels 10in and larger will grow 17.7 percent this year when compared to 2007. Concern about tightening supply in the second and third quarter of this year related to the Summer Olympics and slower expansion of manufacturing capacity have motivated buyers of the panels to place orders early and maintain inventory to meet expected consumer demand, said iSuppli director, LCD, Sweta Dash.

Large-sized LCD panel shipments in 2008 are projected to rise to 458.9 million units, from 389.8 million in 2007. This compares to 38.9 percent growth in 2007. The large-sized LCD panel market is expected to reach 737.6 million units by 2012, expanding at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 13.6 percent from 2007, according to iSuppli.

The research firm forecasts revenue for the large-screen LCD market worldwide to grow to $88.9 billion this year, up 19.9 percent from $74.1 billion in 2007. Faster revenue growth than unit shipments reflects stronger average selling prices due to supply constraints, according to iSuppli.
