MPEG Industry Forum launches ‘3D over MPEG’ campaign

Dec 22, 2009 3:20 PM, By Michael Grotticelli

The MPEG Industry Forum, the Fremont, CA-based advocacy group for DTV technology standards, has formed a 3-D TV working group to promote the adoption and deployment of MPEG-related standards for sending 3-D images over an MPEG-compressed distribution path. The new working group will champion the use of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 through a new marketing campaign entitled “3D over MPEG.”

The MPEG Industry Forum is a not-for-profit organization representing more than 20 international companies and organizations from diverse industries with the common goal to facilitate the widespread adoption and deployment of MPEG and related standards in next-generation digital media services.

Sean McCarthy, chairman of the working group and fellow of the technical staff at Motorola, said the goal is to create a “3-D TV ecosystem that delivers great new experiences to consumers.” This can be distributed today using MPEG-related standards, while existing broadband and broadcast services and infrastructures are 3-D-ready.

The working group will provide a forum for free exchange of information related to this emerging technology, an industry voice advocating the adoption of standards, and for consolidating the overall direction of the 3-D TV industry. Its focus and constituency will be derived from video service providers, consumer electronics manufacturers, content owners, equipment manufacturers, system integrators, software providers, industry advocacy groups, industry analysts, financial institutions and academic institutes.

A major theme of the next MPEG Industry Forum Master Class being held at CES 2010 in Las Vegas in January, featuring leading executives from HBO, AT&T Microsoft and other industry luminaries, will be 3-D TV.
