Speaking at the Broadcast Engineering-B&C News Technology Summit in Dallas last month, Tim Hall, director of broadcast operations at WSMV-TV in Nashville, TN, presented an interesting viewpoint on the importance of news graphics in successfully transitioning to HD local news.

On Sept. 16, the station made its local HD news transition employing a strategy widely used throughout the industry: originate HD in the studio and shoot 16:9 SD in the field. To get the most out of its HD studio origination, WSMV overhauled how its news graphics look and are prepared.

The station put in place a Viz-centric, file-based graphics workflow in which daily news graphics are created by reporters, producers and others with editorial responsibilities who populate predefined templates for news graphics. That move freed the station’s graphic designers for more complex work.

This week, Hall discusses the station’s HD news transition and how its change in news graphics production is working out. This interview was recorded Sept. 25.
