More than one-quarter of U.S. households use DVRs

Twenty-seven percent of U.S. TV households have at least one digital video recorder (DVR), and 30 percent of those households have more than one DVR, according to research released Sept. 15 from Leichtman Research Group.

Recorded viewing is not necessarily the priority in DVR households, according to the research organization. Sixty-eight percent of DVR owners say that they usually watch recorded DVR programs when there is nothing on regularly scheduled TV that they want to watch, according to Leichtman Research.

The findings are based on a survey of 1300 households throughout the United States.

Other findings include:

35 percent of DVR owners feel they spend more time watching programs recorded on their DVR than regularly scheduled programs
45 percent of DVR owners record five or fewer programs per week
68 percent of digital cable subscribers say that they have used video-on-demand services
85 percent of digital cable subscribers who say they’ve used VOD have done so in the past month
42 percent of VOD users are more likely to keep digital cable because of on-demand services
