Polsat, a sports broadcast network in Poland, added tracked video graphics and 3-D animation game analysis to its pregame and postgame HD coverage of the Euro 2008 soccer tournament. The new on-screen look was created with Orad’s MVP sports enhancement package and 3DReplay football enhancement system, which enabled Polsat to generate video clips in real time.

During the tournament, Polsat built its main studio in Bad Waltersdorf, next to the Polish team’s training compound, and used a second OB van to cover the Polish games from the stadiums. From these studios, Polsat leveraged the technology’s flexibility to offer viewers a unique look and feel in HD.

Polsat used the MVP system’s tracked graphics capabilities to highlight players, draw tactical arrows on the field and magnify objects in real time. Preparing clips meant dragging a graphic asset and placing it on the video screen, which quickly generated the animation between the different key frames.

The 3Dreplay system allowed Polsat’s viewers to analyze the many controversial calls from different angles. It froze the frame of the critical moment and turned it into a 3-D graphic model, while the Polsat operator generated a new virtual camera path, looking for the most relevant perspective. The 3DReplay system also provided a set of graphic elements including a virtual offside line, player highlights and tactical arrows.
