WKRC-TV prepares studio for HD newscasts

WKRC-TV, the Newport Television-owned CBS affiliate in Cincinnati, went live last week with 16:9 SD studio pickup from new JVC ProHD GY-HD250 cameras in preparation for HD studio pickup before the February 2009 DTV transition deadline.
WKRC-TV has chosen the GY-HD250 to be its primary studio camera and is one of many Newport stations upgrading to HD with JVC ProHD cameras for both studio and ENG production.
According to WKRC-TV director of engineering Kurt Thelen, among the reasons the stations selected the camera was its ability to be configured as “a true studio camera with CCU and RCU controls.” Additionally, Thelen was impressed with the camera’s ability to resolve flesh tone detail, he said.
When the station is ready to make the switch to HD, “a simple setting change” with the GY-HD250 cameras will allow WKRC-TV to make the transition seamlessly, he said. WKRC-TV also plans to upgrade its electronic newsgathering (ENG) cameras to GY-HD250s, he said.
Currently, the station is using the new GY-HD250s to produce its daily newscasts and two half-hour programs, “NewsMakers” and “Make Peace with Nature."
