Darren Alline, chief engineer of WPLG in Pembroke Park, FL, says while designing and building new HD studios in a greenfield space offers many advantages, it’s not without its challenges.

WPLG, Post-Newsweek Stations’ ABC affiliate serving Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, FL, moved into new HD studios in March.

Unlike many other broadcasters, WPLG took full advantage of setting up its new HD studios in a so-called greenfield space and avoided many of the headaches associated with doing an HD retrofit in a working SD plant.

According to station chief engineer Darren Alline, while not having to work around existing ongoing operations was an advantage, the project presented other challenges, not the least of which was deciding what to do about surround sound during HD newscasts.

Alline discusses some of challenges and lessons learned in this, the first of a two-part podcast interview.
