CEA chief projects strong 2008 sales led by TV displays

Consumer electronics revenue will grow 6.1 percent to $171 billion in 2008 with TV displays accounting for about 13 percent of overall CE revenue, according to a new forecast released last week by Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) president and CEO Gary Shapiro.

Shapiro released the projections and an estimate of the industry’s 2007 performance during his opening remarks at the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The 2007 figures show revenue of $161 million, up 8.2 percent from the 2006 level.

In 2007, TV displays continued to be the largest contributor to the CE industry bottom line, representing about 16 percent of overall CE shipment dollars. According to the forecast, sales of next-generation DVD players will take off in 2008. The CEA forecasts that unit shipments will grow 173 percent to 2.8 million.
