Here come the white-space devices. Meld Technology, a Sunnyvale, CA-based maker of modulators, announced Feb. 21 the MT300 Personal Broadcast station.
The MT300 is a white-space device that communicates with Spectrum Bridge’s database to find unused channels in the TV band to transmit ATSC HD video and control signals over-the-air without a license. The idea behind the product is to support “intelligent signage” in airports, hotels, convention centers — basically anywhere one would expect to find a digital sign — and do away with the cables used to move content from player to display.
But that’s just the start. Company president and CEO Jordan DuVal says the concept for the product ultimately will be extended to consumers to distribute HDTV throughout their homes.
In this podcast interview, DuVal discusses the MT300, its operation, the company’s experience with Spectrum Bridge and where white-space devices are headed in the future.
