MediaCorp to launch terrestrial HD channel by year’s end

Singapore broadcaster MediaCorp plans to launch a commercial HDTV channel in the fourth quarter, becoming one of the first broadcasters in Southeast Asia to roll out HD on a terrestrial platform.

Since June 2006, MediaCorp had conducted an HDTV trial of 1000 households, community clubs and retail outlets receiving HD programs, including MediaCorp-produced productions, co-productions with China and syndicated programming from the United States.

The decision to launch the terrestrial HD channel was based on the favorable feedback MediaCorp received from participants in the trial, according to company CEO (Television) Chang Long Jong.

MediaCorp plans to broadcast all of its channels in HD by 2012, the company said.
