Technical colloquium delves into HD in the U.K.

The 2004 Technical Colloquium held last December and hosted by the Royal Television Society, Thames Valley Centre, tackled the complex issue of HDTV in the U.K.

During a session by Peter Fannon, Panasonic vice president Technology Policy and Regulatory Affairs, speakers widely agreed that Euro 2006 and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing will spur the consumer adoption of HDTV.

Alan Roberts, a 36-year veteran with the BBC Research and Development department, presented "HD Fundamentals," which included the history of HD development and fundamental HD technical issues. In Europe, Roberts envisions the final adoption of 1080/50i for music and sports, and 1080/25psf for drama.

Other issues presented included:

  • “Standards and Compression” presented by Simon Gauntlett;
  • "HD Programming," presented by Paul Kafno;
  • "High Definition for Program Makers," presented by Brendan Slamin;
  • "Displays," presented by Prinyar Boon.
