Westar expands fiber network into Chicago

Westar Satellite Services has expanded its core fiber optic network into the Chicago market to address broadcasters needing more video capacity in the Midwest. The new transmission facility, opened this summer, is located on Dearborn Avenue.
In addition to Chicago, the company — one of North America’s oldest and most establish satellite communications providers — has also expanded its core managed terrestrial network in seven cities, including Washington, DC; New York; Austin; Houston; Dallas; San Antonio; and Waco, TX. The system enables seamless transmission of SD and HD video content throughout the United States over terrestrial and satellite facilities.
Westar, headquartered in Cedar Hill, TX, offers fiber and satellite transmission facilities to customers from on-net HD-capable facilities in those cities. The company is also connected to all major college and professional sports venues, as well as syndication groups and major television stations.
Westar’s fiber-optic terrestrial network and satellite earth station in Texas, the longest operating commercial satellite facility in the nation, can distribute content from more than 49 satellite locations, as well as individual locations throughout Westar’s national footprint.
Westar said it will continue to expand its network, offer HD transmission solutions and offer consulting services with media outlets that need transmission solutions via fiber, teleport or a satellite infrastructure.
