Ted Szypulski named SBE Broadcast Engineer of the Year

The Society of Broadcast Engineers has announced the winners of its 2004 SBE National Awards.
The winner of the SBE Broadcast Engineer of the Year Award for 2004 is Theodore Szypulski, CPBE. Szypulski is director of engineering special projects for ESPN in Bristol, CT. He directed the design and construction of the ESPN Digital Center, a 120,000sq ft, HD (720p) building, from which the initial HD broadcast of ESPN SportsCenter began full-time production June 7, 2004.
A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with BSEE and MSEE degrees, Szypulsk has been a member of SBE since 1983 and holds the Certified Professional Broadcast Engineer certification. He is active with SBE Chapter 14, in Connecticut Valley.
The SBE Educator of the Year Award was awarded to Larry Bloomfield of Florence, OR. Bloomfield has been an instructor at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, CA, and at Guam Trade and Technical School and has taught aspiring HAMs at the Oregon Central Coast Amateur Radio Club. He has been a contributing writer for industry publications.
Winner of the SBE Technology Award for 2004 is Ross Video for its OverDrive live production control system.
The award for Best Technical Article, Book or Program by an SBE Member went to Roswell Clark, CSRE, CBNT, of Tampa, FL. Roswell authored an article titled, “Disaster Planning Put to Good Use,” which appeared in the October 2004 issue of Broadcast Engineering’s sister publication, Radio magazine.
Award recipients will be recognized during the SBE National Awards Dinner, during the SBE National Meeting Oct. 19-20, in Grapevine (Dallas/Ft. Worth), TX. The National Meeting is being held in conjunction with the Broadcast Engineering Expo (BEE) Regional Convention, sponsored by SBE Chapter 67, North Texas.
