New Snell & Wilcox upconverter integrates motion estimation

Snell & Wilcox is releasing a new HDTV upconverter that integrates motion estimation technology. The new Quasar Ph.C platform uses motion estimation techniques based on Snell & Wilcox's Ph.C technology to produce clear and sharp HD outputs from a variety of SD inputs.

Developed from the ground up, Quasar Ph.C combines three Snell & Wilcox technologies in a compact, 1RU package. These include Ph.C motion estimation, premium HD upconversion, and prefix compression preprocessing for noise reduction and dropout filtering.

Unlike traditional upconverters that employ multi-field apertures, Quasar Ph.C's motion compensated conversion delivers sharp HD outputs, regardless of the complexity of the input. For example, Quasar Ph.C is equally adept both at preserving high-frequency detail in action-packed images from sporting events and at converting the fine detail in scrolling text and captions — even when signals contain a mix of film and video-originated material.
