IPTV at Indy draws more than 1.2 million viewer minutes

IPTV technology delivered seven, live in-car camera views from this year’s Indianapolis 500 to the screens of thousands of online viewers visiting two race-centered IPTV sites.
Thousands of viewers logged more than 1,264,230minutes total on the IPTV coverage of the race. Race coverage on Indyracing.com and Indy500.com Web sites was designed to enhance broadcast rightsholders’ race coverage by offering fans access to fan polls, live user chats and interactive commercials. The highlight of the IPTV Indy experience was the ability to select instantly among the seven in-car cameras.
To bring IPTV technology to the race, Houston-based WhiteBlox teamed with IndyCar Racing by providing the technology and applications required to deliver the race via IP.
WhiteBlox began airing time trials, practice runs, interviews and other race activities May 7 leading up to the Memorial Day race. Viewers watched from every state in the union and 88 countries internationally.
According to Fred Nation, vice president Communications for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the goal of using the technology was to provide bonus coverage and give race fans a new way to interact with one another.
