Report finds broadband, FTTH strong in Japan

Triple-play services and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services are continuing to experience strong growth in Japan’s telecommunication’s strong sector, according to a new report offered by Research and Markets.
According to “2006 Asia — Telecoms, mobile and broadband in Japan,” the nation has become the third largest broadband country in the world (behind the United States and China) with more than 24 million service deployments. Softbank, via its Yahoo! BB service, has been the driving force behind the booming broadband market, according to Research and Markets. Its leadership in the rollout of ADSL services took the Japanese market by storm and the push is continuing. Enthusiasm for ADSL appears to be waning, however, as FTTH starts to present a serious option for broadband service in the country. The FTTH subscriber base hit 5 million in early 2006.
The IP telephony market in Japan has continued to grow. With about 9 million VoIP subscribers by the end of 2005, it is expected that the country will have 28 million Internet phone lines by the end of 2007.
