BT, BBC, ITV partner to promote on-demand TV via broadband

Three UK communications powerhouses announced Dec. 11 they would collaborate to foster development of a common industry approach and consumer offering to deliver on-demand television via broadband Internet delivery.

BT, BBC and ITV, which are spearheading the effort, seek support from the UK’s public service broadcasters, device developers and other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to advance the collaboration, according to a joint announcement.

The goal of the collaboration is to develop a standards-based open environment for broadband connected digital TVs. If successful, the effort will result in a new generation of subscription-free devices offering free-to-air channels and a large selection of on-demand TV services. It also could provide delivery of HD and SD movies, shows and interactive content from various sources.

According to ITV executive chairman Michael Grade, the proposal will make convergence a reality by bringing “catch-up from the PC to the TV set in your living room, and all for free.”
