Thomson predicts 75 million IPTV subs by 2009

Thomson is predicting that one-third of the world’s estimated 250 million broadband users could be subscribing to IPTV services within three years.
Jacques Dunogué, senior executive vice president with Thomson, made the prediction last week at the Broadband World Forum in Paris.
Dunogué disputed that competition from the cable television could hamper the adoption of IPTV. “Cable operators don’t have an equivalent which is as interactive and that will actually push people to upgrade the quality of services,” he said.
As to skepticism about the market for converged IP services, Dunogué cited technical problems that plagued early innovators. “I think the technical problems are far behind us,” he said. “I have no doubt that the market will pick up.”
