Six News goes tapeless

Six News Now (SNN6), a 24/7 cable news channel located in Sarasota, FL, has decided to convert its news operations and commercial production to the DVCPRO P2 solid-state memory recording system from Panasonic Broadcast and a Spectrum video server from Omneon Video Networks. The deal includes seven AJ-SPX800 cameras, seven AJ-PCD10 Drives and 50 2GB P2 cards.

Located within the newsroom of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune newspaper, SNN6 shares staff with the newspaper to serve communities throughout southwest Florida with 24/7 coverage of news and specialized local programming (e.g., business, sports, entertainment, real estate, science, etc.). The cable news station, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this July, will be moving its tapeless broadcast operations to a new facility later this year.

For editing, SNN6 will utilize the DaletPlus News Suite —integrating scripting and video editing tools with news automation, rundown management and playout control—in tandem with an Omneon Spectrum media server.

Omneon’s Spectrum server system is built on an open architecture that allows it to support a broad variety of third-party applications for control and transmission, media management, archiving, and collaborative production. As a result, stored media can be shared among many users and applications, as it is at SNN6.

Panasonic’s DVCPRO P2 series of products, currently in use by more than 60 U.S. TV stations, includes the AJ-SPX800 camcorder, AJ-SPD850 recorder, and AJ-PCD10 drive.
