Tokyo to construct one of the world’s largest TV antenna towers

A 2001ft-tall concrete and steel tower in the Sumida River region of Tokyo is set to become one of the world’s tallest freestanding antennas when construction is completed in 2011.

The structure’s purpose is to host antennas for all of Tokyo’s digital radio and television signals, plus a mobile television network.

Reports said it’s no coincidence that the new structure resembles the old 1092ft-high Tokyo Tower, which stood as a symbol of Japan’s postwar economic independence for 50 years.
