IBC2008 recognizes Super Hi-Vision with special honor

Dr. Keiichi Kubota, director general of NHK’s Science & Technical Research Laboratories, accepted a special award Sept. 14 from the organizers of IBC2008 for the first international transmission of Super Hi-Vision (SHV) during the international broadcast gathering.
Kubota accepted the award on behalf of a cadre of partners who made the delivery of live 7680 x 4320 Super Hi-Vision possible at the RAI Center in Amsterdam. The group included BBC in the UK, Italian broadcaster RAI, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Siemens, SIS, Cable & Wireless and Eutelsat.
NHK, BBC, RAI and the EBU have conducted joint research into Super Hi-Vision broadcasting, including a joint experiment during IBC2008 of the world’s first international SHV signal transmission. For the experiment, SHV signals were transmitted to the RAI in Amsterdam from the UK and Italy via distinct transmission methods.
In the UK, live images captured with NHK’s SHV camera in London were compressed using MPEG-2 and transmitted via an ultra-broadband IP network to the RAI Center. In Torino, Italy, SHV content shot in Japan was compressed using H.264, played back and transmitted via satellite to the Amsterdam venue.
