NAB Content Theater to examine technology, tools at cutting edge of entertainment

The NAB Show Content Theater is the place to be this year for convention attendees wishing to see the end result of some of the most innovative work in cinema, television, online and mobile entertainment.

Launched at last year’s convention, the Content Theater provides a degree of perspective on all the swirl of technological developments and conferences at the NAB Show by refocusing attention on the goal of so much of that activity: media content. Specifically, the Content Theater looks at how various technologies and tools were used to produce the content on display.

The 2009 edition of the NAB Show Content Theater will feature:

• Pixar Animation Studios — Case Study: Pixar Stereoscopic
  This case study will examine the use of 3-D in Pixar's storytelling, the process developed for resurrecting and converting 14-year-old images to release “Toy Story” in 3-D on Oct. 2 and the production pipeline designed for Disney Pixar's first feature film in 3-D, “Up,” which opens nationwide May 29. Speakers include Josh Hollander, director of stereoscopic production, and Bob Whitehill, stereoscopic supervisor.
• The Jim Henson Company — Case Study: Jim Henson's Creature Shop — Performing animated characters in real time.
  Kerry Shea, head of digital production, demonstrates the technology from Jim Henson's Creature Shop that allows Henson puppeteers to perform animated characters in real time by combining mechanical input technology, motion capture and a proprietary real-time viewer.
• Animal Planet — Case Study: "Walk the Lion"
  In Animal Planet's upcoming series "Walk the Lion," large predator expert Dave Salmoni embarked on the journey of a lifetime. For six months, Salmoni lived among a pride of lions, alone, in the African wilderness. In this case study, Salmoni will talk about the technology and production techniques used to create this documentary.
• Robin Leach, host of the Content Theater on Tuesday, April 21
  TV personality and entertainment business executive Robin Leach will serve as the host for the Content Theater sessions on April 21. Leach is a founder of Vegas HD, a full-scale Las Vegas TV production facility.
