Australian Broadcasting ceases digital broadcasts

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. is ending digital broadcasting after a two year run. The plug was pulled after the government limited the broadcaster’s operational funding to $460 million a year. The service is not allowed to accept paid advertising.

“This is the first of several hard decisions the ABC will make,” said Russell Balding, managing director of the Australian Broadcasting Corp. ”Maintaining the comprehensiveness of ABC broadcasting is becoming increasingly difficult with funding today 30 percent less than it was in 1985 and 86.”

Digital TV was introduced in Australia in January 2001.
